Damage you find after delivery

Published information from the DP3 claims rules — see the corrections page for the stale 75-day figure this displaces.

One notice window: 180 calendar days

Under the current published rules, notice of loss or damage is due within 180 calendar days of delivery — and the same window applies whether damage was noted at delivery or discovered later. The 75-day figures still found in older guides apply only to HHG shipments picked up before May 15, 2020 and NTS shipments before July 1, 2021.

The after-delivery notice form

Loss or transit damage discovered after delivery is listed on the published "Notification of Loss or Damage AFTER Delivery" form, entered in DPS. The DD Form 1840/1840R names that older guides reference are legacy — current DP3 shipments use the AT/AFTER Delivery forms.

Notice is not required if the claim itself is filed in time

The business rules state that notice is not required at all if a claim is filed with the delivering moving company within 180 calendar days of delivery. Notice and claim are separate steps with separate content — notice requires only the item, inventory number, and a brief description.

Multiple claims are allowed

The published rules allow multiple claims for the same shipment — items discovered damaged later can be claimed even after an earlier claim was filed, within the filing window (9 or 12 months from delivery, keyed to pickup date).

What this tool does

The free calculator dates the notice and filing windows for your shipment. The free PCS Binder records condition photos before a move — the record that separates pre-existing wear from move damage when something surfaces weeks later. The packet builder formats the claim documentation you file yourself.

Your dates, not rules of thumb

The calculator applies the current published windows to your pickup and delivery dates and returns a dated timeline with a calendar export.
